What were they thinking?
I'll tell you what Facebook execs were likely thinking when they made the latest changes. As a company at the forefront of the social media revolution, Facebook needs to keep evolving if it wants to stay there. In this constantly changing, viral, up-to-the-minute news, web-centred world we live in, why do we get so upset when our favourite social media tool gives itself a little facelift?
Maybe it's because in today's world, where as a society we seem to live half of our lives online, checking in on our Facebook accounts is like visiting our parents in our childhood homes. Logging into our Facebook and finding it changed has a shock value akin to going home for a visit and finding our old bedroom turned into a home gym.
So, while we all sit here and complain and post our distaste for these changes as our Facebook status, I can't help but wonder just how quick we would all be to abandon Facebook if it never evolved. For all our grumbling and protesting, can any of us even remember what Facebook was like in the beginning, or even before the last few changes? In a competitive market, Facebook, like all popular social media tools, has to progress and mature to contend. While I welcome the new changes, I do have a bit of concern about privacy.
ReplyDeleteFor those who aren't aware, every time Facebook gives itself a facelift, there is never any guarantee that it keeps your old privacy settings in place. Check it frequently!
I definitely agree with you. It does irk me a bit that Facebook keeps changing, but complaining will do nothing about it.
ReplyDeleteAlso, we are all very tech-savvy individuals. It doesn't take us more than a few minutes to get used to these new changes, and then in a month we forget what the "old" Facebook looked like.
I think i'm one of very few people that hasn't been affected by the changes made to facebook. If we really think about it, the only major differences are that the 'home' icon has moved to the right hand side and now people's posts and what they 'like' is shown in the tab to the right. When it comes down to privacy, we all know deep down that there is no such thing with facebook, that's why it's better to keep what you don't want the world to know (like if you plan on ditching work just to have the day off) away from the World Wide Web! :)
